Laser skin resurfacing is an ideal solution to dramatically tackle pigmentation, uneven skin tone, wrinkles, acne scarring and generalised sun damage. Over time, the UV rays from the sun and other environmental triggers can result in a coarsening of the skin texture, skin dullness, skin damage and pigmented spots. The gradual depletion of collagen as we age also results in lines, wrinkles and loss of skin firmness.

What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

The Pearl laser resurfacing system uses high energy Er:YSGG laser to safely destroy aged and damaged skin. It is an ablative laser, similar to Erbium and CO2 laser surfacing, but the laser’s unique wavelength technology makes treatment intense while still being lower risk. The Pearl laser targets the superficial layer of the skin by delivering pulses of light at 2790nm. The Pearl fractional laser component targets deeper layers of the skin in a chequered pattern to address imperfections by creating micro-columns of skin injury, which stimulates the body to repair and grow new, healthier skin.

What to Expect During The Laser Skin Resurfacing Procedure

On the day, a strong topical anaesthetic cream will be applied to your skin for about one hour. As an additional pain management option, you will be also be offered analgesia.

During your Pearl laser treatment, you may experience a slight pinching sensation as the laser repeatedly moves across your skin. The treatment works by ablating the surface of the skin, encouraging new skin to develop during recovery. We often advise that Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) be applied to the skin immediately after the laser to promote faster healing, followed by our Healite II LED phototherapy.

The average laser skin resurfacing treatment takes around 60 minutes, but this will depend on the size of the treatment area. Additional time will also be allowed for the topical anaesthetic to take effect, and to discuss the aftercare instructions.

Whilst one treatment is enough for most patients, others may require several treatments or a combination of different lasers to achieve their desired result.

Ideal Candidates for Pearl and Pearl Fractional Resurfacing

Pearl and Pearl Fractional resurfacing is ideal for patients with light to medium skin tones who want to treat the common signs of ageing and skin damage. It’s also ideal for patients who are not keen on a more aggressive laser resurfacing, which can involve extended recovery or even general anaesthesia.

We will still need to take your medical history and your aesthetic goals into consideration before it can be determined whether you are an ideal candidate for Pearl laser resurfacing treatments. This can be done during a consultation at MUSE Clinic in Sydney.

Unfortunately, not everyone will be a good candidate for laser skin resurfacing. Those who have taken acne medication in the past year, suffer from an autoimmune disease, have a weak immune system, are prone to scars, experience cold sores, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have had radiation treatment in the targeted area may not be suitable for laser skin resurfacing. Patients who smoke may also not be suitable, or may be advised to quit for a specified amount of time before and after the treatment to allow for sufficient healing.

Pearl Fractional Laser Resurfacing Results and Recovery

After your fractional laser resurfacing treatment, you may notice that the treated area feels swollen and appears red. However, these minor skin reactions are normal and should subside soon after treatment. Patients typically take one week off from work while the skin is peeling and recovering.

The results of your Pearl laser skin resurfacing treatments will not be immediate, as you will need to wait at least a week before you can start to see results. The best results develop over the following weeks, with some people seeing ongoing improvement over three to six months. To achieve the very best result, we will ensure you are using the best home skin care regime to promote long lasting results. During your consultation, we will advise on a personalised skincare regime to ensure the very best results. Additionally, you will be provided with some recovery instructions that will be important to follow, in order to support a good recovery. You may be instructed to:

Avoid exposing the treated area to direct sunlight
Avoid wearing makeup for about three to four days
Avoid excessive heat exposure
Avoid applying products that can irritate the skin, such as sunscreen
Avoid swimming in chlorinated pools
Do not pick at or rub the skin in the treated area
Apply cold compress to manage discomfort
Reduce the risk of cold sores by taking preventative medication, if you have suffered from cold sores in the past
Manage discomfort with prescribed medication, if necessary
Take some time to rest at home as the skin peels, usually for about two to seven days

All medical procedures carry some risk, but Pearl fractional laser resurfacing is able to offer a powerful, intense and effective treatment, with low associated risks. You will be given recovery instructions to follow that are designed to reduce your risks, as well as ensure better results.

As for the side effects, your skin will be red immediately after treatment. There may be some bleeding or weeping in the first 24 hours. The skin will darken, tighten and peel over the first few days. It is important not to pick at the peeling skin to avoid infection and scarring. Skin infections and dermatitis are uncommon but may require additional treatment. Preventative cold sore medication will be recommended if you suffer from recurrent cold sores. Hypo and hyperpigmentation can occasionally occur.
